HOUSTON, TEXAS - When David Lawrence was introduced as RYTES Warriors new 2nd grade basketball coach last year, no expected these boys to end up in Memphis at [AAU] Nationals last year.

The young Warriors are returning five players from a team that finished winning multiple tournaments and reached the Final Four at AAU Nationals.

The Warriors have the talent to make the Orlando this year. They are continuing to develop and most notably, they have a love for the game. Lawrence has added some key players to maintain the competitive balance with national programs who have the Warriors in their sights.

The big difference this year is at practice. The whole team can see it and that is a big difference for us.

The kids came out of the gate running in this years Winter Slam and walked away with a championship title in that tourney.

The journey for coach Lawrence continues with their next stop at the 3rd Annual Spring Bling next month to a possible matchup with the Arkansas Hawks and Louisiana Legends.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.rytesbasketball.net/on-the-block/2012/2/12/rytes-warriors-holt-loses-to-4-in-the-nation-team-izod-in-th.html"><rss:title>RYTES Warriors Holt loses to #4 in the nation, Team Izod in the semis</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.rytesbasketball.net/on-the-block/2012/2/12/rytes-warriors-holt-loses-to-4-in-the-nation-team-izod-in-th.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>New York Style team izod tournament</dc:subject>

The Riverside Hawks 2k12 tournament always boast and impressive field and this year with the RYTES Warriors was no different. Team Izod and New York Rens (Renaissance) obviously headlined the 6th grade division, but Houston's owned RYTES Warriors - Holt made quite a bit of noise in New York this weekend by beating both the NY Bawllerz and MABC Orange by almost 50 points in both games.

Many old and new teams will converge at the 3rd Annual Spring Bling Super Shootout, March 16-18 in Houston, Texas. Some of Texas most exciting youth teams will be there, including Houston's best programs in the city, Oklahoma and Louisiana's finest. Over 120 teams have committed so far.

The newcomers in the tournament are ready to make a name for themselves, too. Teams from North Carolina, The Big Apple and Tennessee have made it known they will play in the Spring Bling. Houston's 2018 teams will field some of the best combo/trio guard tandems in the state, and they will be joined by areas best 2016 teams that have been known to shoot the lights out at the Spring Bling.

Last year, We All Can Go from Tennessee blazed through the 9U, 10U and 11U Platinum divisions, Team Sneed and Bayou Crush battled hard and they too walked away with the 11U Gold and 12U titles respectively. The battle ready Defenders Select teams (select and Silver) both walked off the court as 13U platinum co-champions, and rounding up the remaining titles, teams like (8th) IBF Islanders, 15U Defender Select, Sports Vision (high school girls) and College Bound (HS elite) closed out the event with the Bling.

Commited team list will follow soon.

Hopefully the RYTES Warriors - Holt trip to the Riverside Hawks 2k12 tournament is well worth it.

The Top 25 AAU ranked Warriors - Holt will leave Friday for Saturday games against NY Bawllerz at 1:15pm and against the NY MABC Orange at 3:45 in the Bronx.

“Taking the boys to the Mecca of basketball will be good for them,” Head coach Lamar Holt said. He added that playing against the No.4 team in the nation and some perennial champions that were home to some NBA greats like Lamar Odom, Kenny Smith, Jerry Stackhouse, Mark Jackson, Albert King, Benard King and Ron Artest would also be good for the kids to witness.

thing that the Warriors would like to take with them on the road is a tendency create turnovers. The 6th grade Warriors has made a lot of teams cough up the ball. Holt and his court generals have stressed the need to create points off turnovers.

Holt added that ball control will aid their defense, particularly against teams that struggle running a half-court offense.

“We want to win every game on this trip,” Holt said. “We want to show the east coast that Houston basketball is just as good as the reputation of the east.”

Holt can do a lot to prevent a lower than third place finish in the Empire State this weekend if the Warriors build off of their performance in the Winter Slam last month.

Having a tough mindset at both ends of the court is most important, Holt said.

After most teams meet at AAU nationals, we have heard the chatter from teams in the southwest region.

The SWN allows for teams participating in their tournaments selected by Warriors Elite Sports, such as the Rock City Classic a chance to garner points that will show the region as well as the nation which teams and how they rank among other teams in the region.

The events participating are the The Best In The Winter Slam, Rock City Classic, Spring Superfest and Summer Superfest. More tournaments will be added at a later date.

But Warriors Elite Sports (WES) has wasted no time bringing it to Houston for the Third Annual Spring Bling, the first ever Spring Superfest, the second annual Summer Superfest and the first ever Southwest Nationals which will be held in Houston this year.

WES announced Monday that Houston will be the site for their remaining three events, setting the stage for the city to host the first-ever Southwest Nationals, where the best teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana will battle for the title of best in the Southwest reigon.

The 3rd Annual Spring Bling will be held March 16-18, the first ever Spring Superfest will be held April 28-30, the 2nd annual Summer Superfest will be held June 8-10 and the first ever multi-state event titled Southwest Nationals will be held July 19-22.

“It was definitely not easy,” said Lamar Holt, president of Warriors Elite Sports. “This city has some of the best talent in it and we wanted to give everyone a chance to see these teams all under one roof. We've been working with a lot of people to make this happen.”

Last year’s Spring Bling, with division champions from Tennesse, Lousiana and the greater Houston area drew 5,320 fans at League of America, Houston Stallions facility and West Houston Soccer Club.

“All the feedback that we received from the teams from the events last year was extremely positive,”Holt said. “So we were focused on making this years better than the year before.”

“We got a nice roll going,” Holt said. “Location has always been a factor,” Holt said. “The issue that drives teams to play in some big events is the location of the event.”

When the Southwest National come to town this Summer, it will mark the first time an event will feature the best teams from four-states, rivaling some major tournaments in the nation in the form of size. “This is a city that loves youth basketball,” Holt said.

It had been a hard competitive practice, and the players - their jerseys soaked through with sweat - fronted their coach, some upbeat but tired, others more tired.

Their coach, Lamar Holt, dressed in black sweatpants and a white top, walked towards the group, gathering his thoughts. When he finally spoke it was not X's and O's that were on his mind, it was making sure these boys knew he noticed the hard work and reminded them that working hard in practice will breed success down the road and as always ended it with a prayer.

''This kids,'' said Holt, pointing towards Shawn Thomas, his son, Eden and Jamal Bieniemy, ''every practice they busts their tail. Eden and Jamal worked hard in the offseason and they have brought that same heat to the practices this year. Shawn is not a starter but he works just as hard as the starters do. They are putting in the work.''

"They know," Holt put it bluntly, ''Their effort is a part of this teams success, and the other players realize it and they match their effort and intensity in practice. Every practice they are gaining more respect and trust in each other. It's the kind of attitude that makes this a special team.''

For Holt, there is nothing like the big effort to get him to grin. At RYTES Basketball Academy, the words ''We Believe'' have become a motto and recur routinely this season in the conversation of Warrior coaches and players alike.

Never mind that Holt's top-ranked team knocked off then No.1 team in the country Team Ramey in the finals of The Best In The Winter Slam tournament last year. Or that it finished No.2 in AAU Nationals (2010) for the first time in the organization's history. Or that it is expected to be the top-seeded team in this years Winter Slam when pools for the event are announced. What mattered to Holt, as he is known, was that this team practices hard and plays hard.

''The effort,'' said Holt, ''it's there.''

Whether the big effort brings the Warriors their first Southwest National title this year remains to be seen. Holt's Warriors plays the game at a fiery pace and, with an accelerated offense and pressuring defense, so far has been able to continue to turn that big effort into wins.

To begin with, Holt's Warriors is not overpowering or lengthy, which in a tournament adds pressure to the artistic rather than the physical team. Then there is the set offense the Warriors go to when not scoring in quick transition. Their offense relies a lot, on perimeter shots. Warriors players and Holt agree, saying that the pressure the team applies on defense is all the "stuff" anybody needs about character of this team. Playing full-court, in-your-chest defense requires a commitment to Holt's obsessive concern, hard work. And for a team traditionally known for its finesse style of court play, the success this year will be a direct result of the pressure defense.

In the coach's scheme of things, hard work is a measuring rod. When teams of his win but do not give it their best effort, Holt takes it personally, so much so that he has no problem running lines for any of his teams he oversees that did not work hard enough to suit the organization.

''We will run all night,'' says Holt. ''The one thing I want is that they work hard and play hard. It's got nothing to do with wins and losses.''

How far Holt and his players go at AAU Nationals only time and hard work will tell. But of one thing they can be sure: There wont be many suicide running because a lack of effort or intensity this year.
