Coach Leite's Warriors: 2 Fast 2 Intense
Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 4:12PM
Shaun Leite and his RYTES Warriors have been examples of determination this season and with the Pearland Classic coming up, they're ready to show everyone else.
These Warriors keep winning and Coach Shaun keeps telling his squad, we're still not there yet. We close, we close...He said so after winning three straight games at the Hardwood Classic Tournament, even a win against DSG, where DSG always performs well.
He stood in the hallways of the gym with his assistant, Coach Winston and said it again, "We close..."He is still repeating the chorus, although his Warriors are giving teams fits all over Houston.
Isaiah who goes by the name "Chili", a wide body who is grasping Coach Shaun and coach Winston's philosophy of playing big and under control between the blocks, cracks a smile when he knows he is getting the best of anyone playing against him in the paint. Javon McCormick has shown what speed at the point can do, you can see he keeps a basketball in his hands most of the time. Trey Tollet has that mid range shot and he too looks different since Day 1. Wintrell, who will play with this squad in the Pearland Classic, will bring his set shot 3-point skills to the table.
Coach Shaun knows winning basketball games don't make you a great team. Consistency has to be the key on both ends of the court.
These Warriors can play with the best of them when their perimeter shooters - CD Lamb, Zion Leite and Trey Tollet - are on fire.
They have won with the shooting effort of these three along with that quick point guard Javon shooting jump shots. Isaiah's presence in the paint will either bring 2-points with each effort or a trip to the foul line.
The "ball-hawking" skills of DJ Moss sets the table on the defensive end, but most forget his shooting abilities around the key area. Cameron and Tyler are new to the team but are being counted on the contribute quickly with knocking down their open shots and Tyler, a post player who can put the ball on the floor and create a shot for himself. They should get even better once their big man, Kenny Pleasant returns to the team this May.
McCormick, who is new to the organization, is a pure shooter who can pull the trigger over much taller defenders with his seemingly unstoppable step-in jumper. Lamb is a slasher with the strength and agility to get in the lane for shots at the front of the rim and Zion's shooting range starts once he gets around that 3-point line. Most of the players on the team always seems intense but they like to "play around" like most other kids their age. You can find them taking pointers from other coaches or having a shooting contest before practice. This group is competitive but they are one big family.Shaun's Warriors are new so you can't look at what they did last year and compare. It won't work that way.
They are playing for a D-II 7th grade appearance this year.
Fast and Intense is engine of these Warriors and the track this weekend is the Pearland classic.
