AAU Announces Inagural High School Sullivan Award Scholarship Program

Since 1930, the AAU has awarded the James E. Sullivan Award to the top amateur athlete in the nation. Considered the "Oscar" of sports awards, it has been presented to prominent athletes including Michelle Kwan, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Tim Tebow, and Shawn Johnson.

The Inaugural AAU High School Sullivan Award is presented by EASTBAY, the Athletic SportSource and sponsored by LEAD AMERICA, one of the nation's educational leaders in personalized experiential learning designed to better prepare middle and high school students for their transition to college and future careers.

This new AAU SULLIVAN HIGH SCHOOL Award will recognize four senior male athletes and four senior female athletes based upon their achievements in sport, citizenship and academics. The Sullivan Committee is proud to announce that there will be $50,000 in Scholarship Funds awarded to these eight athletes. To be considered for the award, high school athletes must submit an online application. The application period begins today, February 14th, 2011 at www.highschoolsullivan.org

The Sullivan Committee would like to thank USA TODAY and Herff Jones for their dedication and partnership with AAU to make this award possible.

The Committee gratefully acknowledges the following Districts and AAU Governors for their contributions to the AAU High School Sullivan Award Program: Central AAU, Gov. Jo Mirza, Connecticut AAU, Gov. Jack Bethke, Georgia AAU, Gov. James Henry, Kentucky AAU, Gov. Louis Stout, Niagara AAU, Gov. Dave Davis, Potomac Valley AAU, Gov. Preston Martin, and Virginia AAU, Gov. Travis Bullock.

Thanks also to the following AAU National Sports Committees and their National Chairs for their contributions without which the Award would not be possible: Athletics, Robin Brown-Beamon, Boys' Basketball, Marcellus Williams, Girls' Basketball, Matt Williams, Gymnastics, Ron Ferris, Volleyball, Dr. Roger J. Goudy. Our individual contributors include Robert W. Dodd, AAU President/CEO, Robert and Diane George and Pam Marshall.
